There are many ways that wigs are made. If you are fairly new to wearing wigs you may not be aware of the many options that exist today. Check out this quick read to discover how most wigs are made, along with the benefits of each type.

All wigs begin with what is known as a base or foundation. The main ones used today are:

Weft base – Weft base wigs are the oldest type of wig construction. Although this type isn’t the most advance, it still serves a purpose. Its most important benefit is that it can be removed and is made to easily access the scalp for anyone receiving hair growth treatments and shots.

Stretch Dome Cap – Stretch dome cap is a cap made of elastic and spandex. It has become one of the most popular ways of making wigs because it can fit most head sizes. It is used to make u-parts wigs, which allow space to expose one’s own hair for a more natural look. This wig cap is also a top choice for combining other wig materials such as lace and monofilament.

Monofilament – Monofilament is a type of wig cap construction upon which a fine layer of transparent micro-mesh is inserted either at the parting, crown, or top area. Each strand of hair is then individually hand-tied to this layer of mesh to mimic natural hair growth.

Lace – Lace material can also be used to create a wig that is seamless and undetectable when worn. There are many types of lace materials for wigs. There’s French lace-which is known for its durability. Korean – which comes from Korea. And Swiss lace- which has a finer texture and a less visible appearance. The most expensive types of wigs use lace all over from front to back, while others are used in combination with a weft or spandex dome cap.

For materials made of lace, monofilament, or silk top, strands of hair are hand tied using a technique called hair ventilation. This technique is what gives wigs the look of natural hair. It can be used to add hair to a whole wig or in smaller sections of a wig- usually in the front around the hair line or/and at the section of the wig that where a part line is placed.

Hair that is attached to a band, also called a weft, is placed on parts of a wig that does not require concealment or ventilation.
