There are three main factors that determine a wig price. A wig can cost as low as $20, with prices reaching as high as a few thousand dollars. When buying a wig, you may want to consider your individual hair goals as a top priority and allow cost to be secondary. This can save you money as time goes on. Are you buying a wig for a one-time event such as Holloween? Do you wear your own hair and plan to wear your wig as a quick fix style in between salon visits? Or, are you looking for a medical or hair loss solution? Each situation can determine how frequently you wear your hair wig and it looks over time. Whatever your reason may be, this information is to help you understand what determines a wig price so that you can identify if a wig is overpriced or if a wig’s price is too good to be true.

A Wig Price is Determined By:

1.) The construction of a wig or how a wig is made.

There are different types of wig caps that are used. Some caps cover the entire head and are made with either a mesh or elastic type of fabric. This type is usually preferred for a more snug fit. There’s also your traditional type of wig cap that is made with gaps and spaces in them. This type of foundation is lightweight and is good for those who would like easy access to their scalp for any hair loss treatments or personal comfort reasons. When it comes to wig caps, there isn’t a significant price difference. Which cap to use is chosen by the manufacturer or as a custom request from a customer. The construction of a wig becomes a factor in price when there is a certain kind of lace added to the cap for the purpose of ventilation work. Ventilation is a technique used by wig makers for creating a wig that is undetectable and looks as if a person is wearing their own hair. This work is very tedious because hair is added with a special tool, 1-2 strands at a time. Therefore, a wig’s price is determined not only by if this technique is used but also by the dimension of the area where it’s applied. Here is a list of wig types where this method is used from the least amount to the greatest coverage area. The price of a wig should also correlate with these types. You may also recognize these names to describe a wig.

From least amount of ventilation to greatest:

A.) T-part ~ used on 1-2 inches of the area at the wig’s part-line.

B.) Closure ~ used on 4-5 inches of a wig’s area where the wig can be parted.

C.) Frontal ~ this wig type has ventilation coverage that extends from ear to ear and about 4 inches from the front of the head going back. This technique and coverage area allow more flexibility and parting options.

D.) 360 ~ A 360 ventilated wig covers the entire perimeter of the head. And because this wig-making technique gives the look of real hair growth, you can wear your wig in a high ponytail style. I bet your grandmother’s wig couldn’t do that.

E.) Full Ventilated Lace Wig ~ this is the top-of-the-line of wigs. The tedious work of hair ventilation is applied to the entire area of the wig. Under examination, this wig will look as though it is your own hair growing from the scalp. It is the most expensive type of wig on the market. If you’re this kind of lady and money isn’t your issue, then this wig is for you.

A Wig Price is Determined By:

2.) Hair Length ~

A wig’s hair length can range from 8-32 inches. The longer the hair, the more it costs. Therefore, your style preference will be the main factor when choosing the length of your hair wig.

3.) Hair Color ~

The hair color of a wig is also a major factor in a wig’s price. This is very similar to the price of a hair color service in a salon. It is cheaper to color hair a dark color because it involves fewer processes than coloring hair lighter or blonde. So, if you purchase a black or dark brown colored wig, it is likely that the manufacturer needed to do very little (if any) type of color on the wig. But if you’re purchasing a wig that is multi-colored, light brown, or blonde, it involved at least two processes. That cost is then determined in the wig’s price.

Sidenote: I didn’t include hair quality as a factor for a couple of reasons. The companies that make hair use a variety of chemicals to make hair longer and to create different kinds of textures. Most Indian factories, get hair directly from women who donate their hair for religious purposes. Coloring the hair can also effective hair quality. I have experienced low-cost hair that wore beautifully and more expensive hair that was terrible. If you find a wig whose price seems to be determined by quality, look for the terms double-drawn hair and single drawn hair. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with quality, but more about the density of the hair. The difference is that double-drawn hair maintains the same density or thickness from top to bottom. Whereas single-drawn hair is thicker at the base to mid-shaft but thin out towards the end.

I hope this knowledge benefits you on your hair wig journey. If you come across a $20 lace-front-looking wig, I suggest you keep your money. Likewise, if you’re offered a wig that’s less than a frontal for $300 or more be cautious.
